A stop is recommended at the natural refuge Avarios del Caribe, 31 kilometers south of Limon. It is a small island of 88 hectares, attached to the shore of the Estrella River since the earthquake of April 1991. Nearly 320 species of birds have been recorded there and there is a magnificent refuge for sloths that is a must-see. The refuge has been doing remarkable work for many years to save these endearing animals. They also conduct scientific research to analyze their habitat, and educate visitors about the environment and the threats to the sloth population.
