40 km away from Rostov, the museum town of Starotcherkassk was the capital of the Don Cossacks from 1593 to 1805. Its strategic position near the passage over the Don River allowed the Cossacks to perform their role of protecting the trade routes (and occasionally to carry out a few raids on well-loaded boats). Left in favour of the new Cossack capital (Novotcherkassk) in 1805, it is now essentially a very interesting reserve, where one can walk in the open air in the renovated city to better understand the daily life of the peasant-soldiers who built the region. Starotcherkassk can easily be the subject of a relaxing day trip from Rostov
