Volgograd, originally called Tsaritsyn, was first renamed Stalingrad ("City of Stalin"). It is a city steeped in history, but almost no pre-World War II buildings remain - all or almost all of them having been destroyed during the Battle of the City in 1942-1943. Despite the weight of the past, Volgograd has been able to rebuild itself both literally and figuratively: it is an important university centre with a dynamic life. In this 90 km long city, the tree-lined streets in the centre with their pastel buildings lining the Volga River are perfect for a stroll. No need to venture to the 4 corners of the city, but you still have to take its legendary metro-tram!
