Close to Rostov, there is a monastery-village in its pious rusticity. A central alley and a superb kremlin, on the riverside, justifies this detour on the road to Ouglitch. Borissoglebski, the oldest and most powerful of all the fortified constructions of the Golden Ring, was besieged for two years by the Poles, without result. It was here that Basil III took refuge with his mother during the great quarrels between the princes: he called it "his monastery" and had his son Ivan IV christened there "The Terrible". The monastery was deserted by the monks in 1928 and suffered many damages at the hands of the communists
