It is more commonly known as Ōshima and is about 40 km long and 720 km² in area, making it the third largest island in Japan. The island was used as a refuge by Saigō Takamori (1827-1877) who had been sent into exile. Saigō Takamori, a samurai from Satsuma province, joined Satsuma's daimyō to fight the policy of rapprochement with the West since the signing of power with Commodore Perry. He took refuge at Kyūshū after the death of his lord and the position of II Naosuke. He attempted suicide in Kagoshima Bay, but was rescued by sailors. He was exiled to the island of Amami-Oshima where he lived for a little over three years. He then returned and entered the service of his daimyō Hisamitsu Shimazu, who sent him back into exile, this time to Tokunoshima. Amnesty later, he openly took the emperor's side and was appointed chief general of the armies under Meiji, after defeating the troops shogūnales in Toba and Fushimi. He was in favour of intervention in Korea and had to resign. He returned to the Satsuma to establish a private samurai school. After the government wanted to close the Kagoshima arsenal, he led his young school into rebellion in 1877, and in the face of inexorable defeat, committed suicide. It was rehabilitated by the emperor in 1891.Here, the crops are typically subtropical with pineapple, sugar cane, oranges and papayas: in particular, daikonzuke (sweet condiment made from turnips) is prepared. There is also the gum tree and a kind of bushy scrubland. The fauna consists mainly of insects and snakes. As for the architecture, we can see that the granaries are very similar to those of the Fiji Islands. The craft is dominated by amamino tsumugi, a silk fabric with pretty tones and beautiful designs. Naze is both the main city of the island and its port. She has kept a certain charm. However, after a walk around the docks, you will quickly have a tour of the city. You can always take a look at the poisonous snakes at Habu Center, a few minutes from the docks. At Tsumugi Center, located about fifteen minutes by bus, you will see a small local fabric centre.
