Since the eruption of Mount Unzen in 1991, climbing it is forbidden. However, one can still take a cable car to reach the top of Mount Myōken, culminating at 1,330 m. From there, one can hike to Mount Fugen in 2 hours. The view of the lava flows is quite spectacular. Ask for a map at the information center in Unzen. There are still some buildings preserved here and there as educational relics to show the damage caused by a volcanic eruption, such as the Onokoba Primary School, which was destroyed in 1991 by the heat of the ash from the fiery cloud.
