This huge national park (905 km²), 50 km south of the Shiretoko Peninsula, is located in a region of lakes, including Mashū-ko, Kussharo-ko and Akan-ko lakes, forests and volcanic peaks. These are named Me-Akan-dake and O-Akan-dake(Akan-dake for female and Akan-dake for male). For the record, Lake Mashū-ko, which is located in the caldera of a volcano, is the most popular of the three lakes due to its pristine waters and the mist that brushes the surface. Nature and hiking aficionados can take many day hikes here. The main access towns are Abashiri and Bihoro in the north and Kushiro in the south.
