Of the seven islands in the archipelago, Ōshima is one of the best known, probably because it is the most accessible. It is also the largest. Its special climate, which gives it a small variation in temperature throughout the year, has earned it the nickname "the Island of Eternal Spring". But beware in summer, the island is very popular with vacationers from Tōkyō. The beaches on the north and west coasts of the island are prime spots for diving, sunbathing and other beach activities in the summer. Ōshima Island is also known for its camellias, which can be seen from about January to March.
