The ancient city was surrounded by solid turret walls, which still remain traces. Within this fortress, the spaces were intended for various functions: Piazza del Tocco represented Curia Civilis, a former seat of the local parliament composed of representatives of the nobility and the bourgeoisie, while Piazza Tribuna formed the Curia Episcopalis (the episcopal citadel).

Among the rich nobility palaces of the old town, with courtyards and gardens, you will notice the Palazzo dell 'Abate Elia (Via Zaleuco), with its elegant Catalan-style windows dating back to the xivth century.
