FESTA DI SAN GIUSEPPE

On the night of 19 March, on the occasion of Saint Joseph's Day, the municipality of Ferrandina, in Basilicata, is illuminated by large braziers during the Fuochi nella Notte ("fires in the night") festivities. This traditional festival, which combines fireworks, music, typical dishes and good wine, celebrates the passage from winter to spring. People warm themselves by the fire with a local speciality while listening to folk songs and music. Some young people perform the salto del falò, a jump over the flames of the braziers.
