Acerenza, 35 km from Potenza, is mentioned for the first time by Horace, who describes it as Caelsae nidum acherontiae ("the eagle's nest of upper Acerenza"). This small citadel perched at 833 m on a tufa rock is a very pretty agricultural town of about 3,000 inhabitants. According to one of the classifications of the ANCI (National Association of Italian Municipalities), the medieval town of Acerenza is one of the 50 most beautiful villages in Italy. A stroll through its narrow streets reveals historic palaces with pretty courtyards, unexpected views and the 11th-century cathedral, considered one of the most beautiful in Basilicata.
