The Church of San José is a highly historical place of worship, whose first stone was laid in 1532. It is the second church built in the Caribbean. The family of the first governor of Puerto Rico, Juan Ponce de León, regularly visited the church. His remains were kept here for almost 350 years before being transferred to the Cathedral of San Juan. Inside, the Gothic ceiling is admirable, the church being one of the first examples still standing of Spanish Gothic architecture of the sixteenth century.
