Since its creation, the Plaza Libertad, formerly known as the Plaza del Recreo, has been the focal point of all the city's major community events. In 1872 it was renamed in honor of the civil war period and today it has a rectangular fountain lined with flower gardens and a statue of the liberator Lavalleja. This square is also a social and popular gathering place, where residents and visitors can meet, relax and attend local events.
