HEROES' ACRE

Set against one of the hills surrounding Windhoek, the Arch of Heroes is an official war memorial, inaugurated on 26 August 2002. After climbing a good 50 steps, you will arrive at a sort of obelisk that dominates the city. On this site are buried the main heroes of the resistance and liberators of Namibia. Every year, the country's officials gather to bury or celebrate the memory of their heroes. The place is a strong symbol for Namibians, silence and respect on the spot are of course required.
