While the train was only recently used by travellers, the creation of the luxury Desert Express between Windhoek and Swakopmund made the Namibian railway network proud. First in Namibia and Southern Africa . The crossing of the Namib Desert aboard the Desert Express is a unique experience to discover Namibian landscapes from a different angle. Reservations must be made in advance.
The train, which has already made a lot of talk about it in Namibia and abroad, wants to be an unforgettable experience : Air-conditioned, spacious air-conditioned cars, subtle design combining authenticity and functionality, high-end service and pleasantly personalised. The Spitzkoppe Lounge remains open all night for the passengers of the sleeper car.
The Welwitschia restaurant offers refined cuisine, complemented by great South African wines. Large windows open onto the oldest desert in the world… television screens scroll through magical images of African wildlife. The sleeper cars are air-conditioned and decorated with taste and authenticity. Equipped with shower, toilet, washbasin and radio, the cabins offer three beds, convertible into seats during the day. Room service is available 24 hours a day. And we also thought of spaces for your luggage! At the Stardune Bistro-Bar, hot drinks, snacks and salads are available at any time of day or night, as well as refreshments (Namibian beer, fruit juice…). Starview Coach is a comfortable wagon for seating passengers, with large windows and a beautiful glass ceiling that allows you to enjoy the desert starry sky at leisure. Safes are provided for valuables and personalized service is offered throughout the journey.
The trip is punctuated by exclusive activities : visit of Mount Spitzkoppe, on the Swakopmund-Windhoek route, or the Moon Valley, on that of Windhoek-Swakopmund. On every route, the train also offers a stage in a game of luxury ranch overlooking the mountains north of Windhoek. Transfers to the airport can be arranged by Desert Express staff, as well as reservations to the hotel for the day in Windhoek (Windhoek Country Club, Safari Court Hotel…), prior to departure. A minibus will pick up the passengers at their hotel to transfer them to the station. A transfer from the Swakopmund Hotel to the train station is also planned for train passengers.
It should be noted that several readers were recently disappointed by this experience; It is therefore advisable to pass through a tour operator to make his reservation and inquire about the quality of the service.
