At 25 km from Namangan, on the right bank of the Syr Daria, you will be able to wander among the vestiges of the ancient Aksikent... The city was founded in the 3rd century BC but was destroyed during the Arab invasion. It rises from its ashes to become, under the Samanides, the main city of the Ferghana valley before being razed again by the Mongolian troops. It regained its importance only under the Timurids, and, at the time of the Silk Road, maintained relations with Damascus, Baghdad, China and India. Unfortunately, a major earthquake in the seventeenth century destroyed it again, and this time forever. The remains, mostly buried under the earth, form a kind of small hilly desert with an impressive extent and offering very beautiful views of the Syr Darya. For those who are not archeology buffs, the view of the river is worth the detour. Few tourists take the time to visit this site, so you will surely have the chance to have this place just for you. However, try to respect it as much as possible, in particular by avoiding climbing on the remains or walking on the ancient walls and foundations with walking sticks.
