In 980, Ibn Sinna, known in the West as Avicenna, was born in this village. The scholar did not stay there long before traveling throughout the Muslim world to acquire and disseminate his knowledge, which he condensed into the Avicenna Canon, the first encyclopedia of "modern medicine. Afshana is now worth a visit for the museum it houses, dedicated to the Persian scholar, and renovated a few years ago on the initiative of the Avicenna-France association. There is no regular bus service between Bukhara and Afshana, so you will have to charter a cab and negotiate the waiting time to be brought back to Bukhara, or continue your journey.
