ROATAN BACKPACKERS' HOSTEL
Mel is a Canadian from Ontario. She arrived in Roatan in 1998 while she was a diving instructor. She fell in love with the island and stayed there, developing a small hotel/youth hostel very friendly. The place is also his house where she lives with her two sons. So Mel welcomes you in her home, in the true sense of the word, and she puts her whole heart there. The hostel works almost entirely with solar energy and Mel is always very collaborative with all the projects for protecting wildlife and flora on the island. She knows the island like her pocket and shares all these good tricks with pleasure.
Unlike Utila (which is very backpackers oriented), Roatan mainly offers hotels more than US $ 100 at night… Roatan Backpackers'Hostel is one of the few alternatives for travellers in the small budget. Its location is certainly not ideal (not directly at the edge of the beach), but you can easily go to the Octopus Diving centre for example (which offers preferential rates for hostel guests), and for 18 lps you can reach West End in 10 min of mini bus (these go every quarter of hour). It is not a luxury hotel, but a truly good mind. Many travellers wishing to stay for several days on the island (to pass their diving certification for example) choose this hostel for its very good value/price ratio and Mel's warm welcome (which speaks French very well).
