The little-known oasis of Tanouchert is located halfway between Ouadane and Chinguetti. We say unknown, because it is often snubbed by organized tours who prefer to follow the newly redone track west of Tanouchert. This last one, although longer of about forty kilometers, is indeed much faster and more comfortable, but the landscapes crossed while passing by Tanouchert are much more interesting. This small oasis is worth the detour for its authenticity. The nomads are all connected to a palm grove where they meet in the summer for the Guetna, or Date Festival, a social as well as family event.
