Mpika is a busy and congested crossroads town of nearly 100,000 people. It marks the division of the Great North Road to the Tanzanian border on the one hand, and to Kasama and Lake Tanganyika on the other. It has a post office, hospital, gasoline, banks and supermarkets. The North Luangwa Conservation Project and the Tazara Railway are both headquartered in this town, which also houses a national parks office. It has little of interest, but the area has many attractions. Although Mpika has a few basic guesthouses, it is possible to sleep in the area.
