Located next to the National Museum, in front of the government offices called the New Government Complex, the Freedom Statue is the centerpiece of the May 25 African Freedom Day celebrations. Made of bronze, it represents a man breaking his chains. It symbolizes the Zambian people breaking free from colonial rule. Erected in 1974 to celebrate 10 years of independence by the father of the nation Kenneth Kaunda, it is personified by the face of Zanco Mpundu Mutembo, an imprisoned opponent of the colonial regime who managed to break his chains.
