CHIESA DI SANTA MARIA ASSUNTA

One of the emblematic monuments of the city, with its dome covered with colourful majolica. The church, founded in the 10th century as a Benedictine abbey, was completely remodeled in the 18th century. Once inside, above the main altar, see The Madonna and Child, a 12th-century Byzantine icon considered to be one of the most important paintings in southern Italy. Note also the omnipresence of the majolica typically inherited from the art of Amalfi.
