House that became the first bakery in Pompeii equipped with oven and instruments for grinding wheat
Dating from the 2nd century BC, the house was transformed into a bakery during the restructuring works that followed the earthquake of 62 AD. It is the first of the thirty-five known bakeries to be found in Pompeii. In the garden(hortus) there are several elements that can be discovered, including an oven for baking bread and lava stone tools for grinding wheat. These millstones were operated by slaves or donkeys, using wooden beams inserted in the upper part.
