NATIONAL PARK OF THE ST. LAWRENCE RIVER
The largest protected alpine area in Europe with 25 valleys in Bormio.
Straddling Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige, it is the largest protected Alpine area in Europe. It covers more than 300,000 hectares. Created in 1935, it has 25 valleys, more than a hundred glaciers (including the Glacier dei Forni, the highest in Italy at 2,176 m), some fifty lakes of glacial origin, 40,000 ha of forests, and numerous strictly protected animal and plant species. It is not uncommon to see marmots and weasels, roe deer, chamois, deer, ibex, but also partridges and marmots. Lynx, bears and wolves, once threatened with extinction by over-hunting, are gradually returning to the park's mountains. Straddling several municipalities in Lombardy and Trentino-Alto Adige, Bormio is one of the ideal starting points for discovering this beautiful park. A large information office welcomes visitors to provide all the necessary information on the hikes (on foot or by bike), workshops and guided tours regularly organized by the park. A small museum explains the characteristics of the fauna, flora, landscape and human constructions within the park. Stop in front of the life-size reconstruction of a Bearded Vulture nest, a rare species of vulture that has made the park its natural habitat. A video linked to a webcam films the nest of this beautiful bird live.
