This port town of 70,000 inhabitants located on the Caspian Sea is a strange conglomerate of urban poles distributed along the coast and on advanced land languages to the sea. Turkmenistan's ambition is to turn the city into a seaside resort, but it is still a long way off: Next to the few beaches of the city extend from long dikes with rusty iron bars. The city changed its name after independence to pay tribute to the president who revived the local oil refinery, the main source of jobs. In the long term, thanks to oil and tourism, Turkmenbashi has the ambition to become the second largest economic pole in the country, even though it is not clear at the moment.
