A railway line connects Ashgabad to the Caspian Sea westward serving the towns of Balkanabat and Turkmenbashi (11 hours journey). Eastward, the train allows to go to Mary (8 hours 30) and Turkmenabat (3 hours). A new line cuts across the desert to connect Ashgabad to Dashogus. It was inaugurated in early 2006. But the train is one of the slowest ways to move inside Turkmenistan, nor is it the most comfortable. Heat can be stifled in summer: plan for water supplies.
