L'Aquila, a city of art, is home to two famous museums: the Munda Museum and the MAXXI Museum. The Munda Museum, also known as the National Museum of Abruzzo, was originally located in L'Aquila's Spanish Fort, but was closed due to damage caused by the 2009 earthquake. It has since been relocated to L'Aquila's former municipal abattoir, where it houses a selection of archaeological objects and works of art dating from the Middle Ages to the modern era. The Museo MAXXI, an extension of Rome's Museo MAXXI, is located in the Palazzo Ardinghelli in L'Aquila's historic center. It offers exhibitions of contemporary art, performance, photography and architecture, and also organizes educational programs and training activities in collaboration with the local community.
