Numerous parades as well as masked parades take place during a whole week for a colorful carnival.
According to the calendar established in the 4th century by Bishop Ambrose, the city's patron saint, Carnival in Milan lasts until the Saturday after Ash Wednesday. For the occasion, a great parade of masked characters takes place in the streets of the centre. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the city in a different way. The symbol of the carnival, the mask of Meneghino, a character from the Commedia dell'Arte, is found everywhere. Today, the word "meneghino" is more widely used to designate anything that speaks of the city, the Milanese or the Milanese language.
