TOUR DES VILLAGES WALSERS
The Val d'Ayas was not spared by the Germanic colonization of the late Middle Ages: groups of Walsers, from the neighbouring Gressoney valley, founded a number of villages on the heights of the capital, all located to the orographic left of the Evançon torrent except Saint-Jacques (called Canton des Allemands en ayassin), the last hamlet of the commune at the bottom of the valley. If the Upper German language has completely disappeared, the architecture has remained intact, for the delight of hikers in search of typicity. A simple half-day walk allows you to visit the villages of Mascognaz - before which there is a beautiful illuminated waterfall in the evening -, Frantze, Cunéaz, Le Crest - very close to each other - and Soussun. There is no specific itinerary for this route, but it is sufficient to follow the indications of the hiking trails that start from Champoluc or Saint-Jacques towards the above-mentioned hamlets.
