Founded in 1080, this Orthodox monastery (Вељушки Mанастир/Veljuški Manastir) is located 400 m above the village of Veljusa (population 1,500). Dedicated to the Mother of God Eleousa ("of compassion"), it houses a community of nuns, a garden with boxwood lined paths and various buildings that have been rebuilt many times. The catholicon (main church) preserves elements of the eleventh century: fragments of mosaic, marble iconostasis and some frescoes, including that of Christ Emmanuel in the dome. Beautiful views over the plain of Strumica.

paix de l'âme, bonheur des yeux
le paysage où se niche ce monastère, :une falaise dominant l'étroite vallée au fond de laquelle s'étend Strumica est déjà une récompense. Il faut toutefois surmonter son dégoût en traversant des tas d'ordures déposées le long de la route en sortie de ville. L'enclos si paisible, dans lequel vivent 5 religieuses, possède une superbe église (de pur style byzantin) de la fin du 11 ème siècle dont les murs portent des fresques de grande valeur. tout cela est expliqué par une soeur dans un anglais très compréhensible. Tout cela vaut largement le détour
