French presence in Bitola. The creation of the French Consulate dates back to 1854. Two years later, French Lazarist brothers from Thessaloniki opened a mission and then a school. And in 1879, the sisters of Saint Vincent-de-Paul created a girls' school. This presence will last until the Bulgarian invasion of 1941. The consulate reopened in 1996, inaugurated by Philippe Seguin, then President of the National Assembly and former mayor of Epinal (Vosges), a town with which Bitola is twinned.
