In the 16th century, Bariba horsemen from Nigeria invaded Borgou. Their leader, Sunon Séro, finally established peace and one of his grandsons, Séro Sykia, founded the city of Nikki, which became the capital of the powerful Bariba kingdom. However, at the beginning of the 19th century, the king of Nikki was no longer able to impose his authority. In 1831, the Bariba and Yoruba were attacked by Fulani warriors. The king of Nikki, Séro Kpéra, was killed. The kingdom then fell into decay. A simple city of passage today, except during the great festival of the Gani, a vestige of past grandeur and celebrated every year is famous far beyond the Borgou.
