ECO-BÉNIN
Established in 1999, Benin Ecotourism Concern (Eco-Benin) is a Beninese non-governmental organization. It promotes ecotourism and local development projects and promotes «responsible, equitable and solidarity-based human development».
The NGO uses ecotourism as an economic engine for the development of local communities. It intervenes in regions where traditionally-related fisheries or agriculture are declining, or in localities with natural and cultural heritage threatened with extinction or ill-exploited.
Eco-Benin is trying to develop a form of tourism that benefits host communities first and foremost. They also participate in the protection of their natural resources and cultural identity.
Each ecotourism site is managed by the host community, with the aim of becoming independent in the provision of ecotourism services within their village. A share of revenues (between 10 and 25% depending on activities and projects) is intended for projects of Community interest (rehabilitation of a school, construction of latrines, etc.) or to assist the poorest families.
