Bena is located around 16 km south of Bajawa. With its impressive stone formations, ancestral sanctuaries and traditional houses, Bena is an essential part of Ngada culture. One of the most beautiful traditional villages in Flores, it lies at the foot of Mount Inerie, whose perfect cone dominates the entire region at a height of 2,245 metres. The bamboo houses with their four-sloped straw roofs are extended by a bamboo overhang under which the women weave ikats, chewing a strange composition made fromareca nut, also known as betel nut, which leaves the lips and gums reddish-orange.
