STELE OF THE S.S. DUMANA SHIPWRECK

On the road by the sea stands a stele eaten by the greenery. It reads: "In memory of the victims of the sinking of the S.S. Dumana torpedoed on 25 December 1943". A Royal Air Force tanker, torpedoed by the German submarine U-515, which had on board 169 people and 300 tons of military equipment for RAF seaplanes. About 40 sailors perished in the attack. One year later, the Free France dedicated this stele to them.
