The Retezat Mountains are famous for their mountain pastures, circuses and many glacial lakes (80).They make Retezat one of the most beautiful of the country, appreciated by hikers. The highlight is Mount Peleaga (2 519 metres), followed by Mount Păpuşa. They are called the "fortress" because of the number of their peaks over 2 200 metres (over 60). The National Park of Des was the first Romanian national park (established in 1935). It includes the Retezat, Godeanu and Ţarcu mountains. Many rivers take their source and there are nearly 40 lakes. Approximately 2% of the plant species present are endemic. Many animal species also include 1 000 species of butterflies, chamois, deer carpatiques, otters, bears, lynx…
