In the 1980 s, nothing would have suggested that the tiny town of Establishment would eventually become the active centre it is today. Its development is due to the activities of the nearby sugar plant because nothing in the geographical configuration of Establishment has changed: it is always the end of the world in the midst of warm and vaguely inhospitable depression.In fact, the Sosumo industrial complex has attracted thousands of workers and their families. More than 10 000 people (including 3 000 employees of Sosumo) are gathered in a perimeter of some km 2, which makes Establishment one of the most populous places in Burundi, in one of the regions that is least! Today, while the sugar society has experienced a serious crisis, it is difficult to say what the future will be able to live in a fairly restrictive region.
