10 km north of Bukeye by the RN 1, Banga is another town whose history is intimately linked to the Burundian monarchy, as it was one of the country's largest drummers. On the southern slope of Mount Banga, the Hutu representatives of large clans of tambourinaires (Abanyuka and Abashubi) were installed, which had the load of the Nyabuhoro drum («the drum of peace»), one of Burundi's most sacred with Karyenda. Today, the Banyuka perform performance in Banga (on-site information). On the other hand, it is said that the locality has been named after its inhabitants saved the lives of King Mwezi Gisabo by hiding him as he was prosecuted by criminals. Banga means the "secret" in kirundi, an important oath in Burundian culture, and it was an honour for the people to receive this name from the king.Although the town is not as large as Bukeye, it offers the same access facilities to the Kibira and its foothills. The reception centre of the Bene Tereziya sisters is a good starting point for walks at all levels.
