Kananga, capital of the province of Central Kasai, was developed in the late 19th century under the name of Luluabourg along the Lulua River. It was here that the first constitution of independent Congo was adopted in 1964. Luluabourg became Kananga in 1966. With its 2 million inhabitants, Kananga is a cultural melting pot, bringing together nearly a dozen different peoples who make up the province. In addition to Tshiluba, Lingala and other community languages are also spoken. Tourists can savour the city's vibrant life or take a stroll along the banks of the Lulua River, admiring the palm trees scattered across the plain.
