Bandundu is built on the right bank of the Kwilu River, about ten kilometers upstream from the confluence with the Kasai River. After independence, the town was a large fishing village of 15,000 inhabitants, abandoned by the colonial administration because of the tsetse fly that infested the region. The main activity of the city is centered around its port where boats going up to Kikwit and those going down to Kinshasa cross paths. The stopover in Bandundu is a necessary passage for the supply of agricultural products and raw materials. Water is an essential element in the daily life of the inhabitants.
