Situated 350 km from Kinshasa, capital of Central Kongo province, Matadi is at the extreme limit of the navigability zone of the Congo River. Small boats transport cargo to and from seaports. Built on a rocky hill, Matadi (Kikongo for "rock") has a rugged topography. Upstream from the town, you can contemplate the Mpozo River, where the railroad to Kinshasa runs through the canyon. Matadi is a busy port city. Cabs and taxi-buses are ideal for getting around. It's easier to reach Matadi from Kinshasa by road.
