Around this modern port where nitrate is transported, the city has developed an important deep-sea fishing industry: there are some world records. Its waters are home to the largest yellowfin tuna in the world. Most of the city's buildings date from the golden age of saltpeter mining. At that time, the city served as an export port for the oficinas of the hinterland. Today, the ore has replaced the saltpeter. Note that the road that leads to Iquique, along the ocean, is much more spectacular than the Pan-American Highway: desert landscapes on a background of foam and sunset guaranteed!
