The chapel belonged to the hospital of the same name, now extinct. After 1751 the earthquake destroyed the health centre reserved for the people, Governor O'Higgins ruled the foundation and construction of the hospital on 22 February 1791. The chapel dates back to the same time and was declared National monument in 1972.
