Hampi, which boasts almost 4,000 ruins dating back to the medieval Hindu kingdom of Vijayanâgar, has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Hampi's temples, sculptures and monolithic monuments bear witness to the exceptional mastery of their distant builders. The Hindu style of Hampi's architecture reflects the splendor of the Vijayanâgar Empire. The beautiful landscape of pink sandstone, sugar cane fields and rice paddies, crossed by the Tungabhadra River, adds to the magical atmosphere of the site and contrasts with the dryness of the surrounding area.In 2011, several businesses and buildings in the Hampi Bazaar were destroyed by the government, displacing over 300 people who had lived and worked there for decades. This contested destruction was carried out in order to preserve the site as much as possible. The government has given the remaining inhabitants until 2020 to move and relocate outside the historic area. In the name of conservation, it plans to set up a vast, fenced-in archaeological park for which a fee will be charged.
