The Bell kings were masters of a large coastal strip in today's Littoral province. The palace was built by the Germans for King Bell, on the model of an Asian pagoda. This was the nickname given to it by Louis-Ferdinand Céline in his novel Voyage au bout de la nuit during his stay in Douala in 1916-1917, before the name was adopted by the city's inhabitants. For several years, it was occupied by a cabaret.
