The gallery (which became a museum in 2004), which was opened on 7 January 1957 by the Soviet regime, now boasts 8,000 paintings (Repin, Vasnetsov, Chichkine, Kramskoï, Sourikov, Brullov). It boasts some sixty works by Nicolaï Roerich (1874-1947) and Nicolaï Gritsuk (1922-1976). 2 permanent exhibitions: one devoted to icon painters (15th-20th century), the other to Russian art (18th-20th century).
