Obtained city status in 1980. Centre for the exploitation of Ourengoïskoé deposits, with high oil and gas condensation, north of the Tioumen region, south of Obskaïa Bay. Mining of methane began in 1966. The deposits are open to a depth of 1,1 to 3,1 km. The gas is channelled through the Ourengoï-Pomary-Uzhgorod pipeline to Western Europe.
