Welcome to the Arctic Circle in the land of the Nenets! The village of 1595 became Salekhard in 1933, today the capital of the Yamalo-Nenets Autonomous District (50,064 inhabitants), on the Ob river, at the mouth of the Polouï river. Its economy is based on fishing, river transport (at thaw time, four months a year) and the gas industry. From the imperial period, Salekhard is established as a land of exile. From 1949 to 1953, the prisoners of the Gulag built a railway line there (to Igarka, abandoned). Dynamic, cultural, it has an excellent ethnographic museum. Every year in June, the Soul of Tundra ethnofestival takes place (Душа тундры).
