Hayma is the administrative center of Jiddat Al Harasis, the vast plain where the last free-roaming white oryx on the planet were slaughtered in 1972 and where they are now living again. Like many of the soulless "modern" towns scattered across the remote corners of the sultanate, it has everything you'd expect from a "town center": a petrol station, a few small supermarkets, coffee-shops and a modest hotel. The area is quite windy, which reinforces the feeling of being at the end of the world. There's nothing special to do here, but we'll pass through on our way to the oryx reserve or for a break on the Muscat-Salalah road.
