Hermitage located in the heart of the protected biotope of Gaztelugatxe with an impressive view

It lies at the heart of the 158-hectare Gaztelugatxe protected biotope, between Bakio to the west and Bermeo's Matxitxako cape to the east, from where the views are impressive. Following the coastline of cliffs, you can see two light-colored rocky islets, rare geological accidents in the region. Atop the first islet stands the sublime hermitage of San Juan (founded by the Templars), reached by a bridge and an interminable staircase of 241 steps. The route has been laid out as a Way of the Cross with 14 stations. Legend has it that St. John the Baptist landed at Bermeo and reached the islet in just three strides, leaving a footprint with each step. On the site of the last footprint, he is said to have ordered the construction of the hermitage. As a result, it is customary to ring the chapel bell three times in vow, after the arduous climb up the steps. The three blows of the bell are, of course, a reference to the three strides of St. John the Baptist. At certain times, a (free) permit is required to climb to the top (website).

Every year, the people of Bermeo go there in procession on St. John's Day (June 24). The site has also attracted many curious visitors since it was used as the setting for the Game of Thrones series.

Its legend, its magnificent site steeped in mystery and the skill of its builders make a visit to the San Juan hermitage a must.

Extra-ordinaire
